The Martians: Earth men have been settling on Mars since before the Great Exodus of the last decade of the 20th Century. While all have witnessed the the innumerable ruins of the Martian civilization, the still flowing canals and awsome, mile high glass pillars reaching into the dusty sky, few have ever seen a Martian. Reclusive and few in number, this vastly ancient race still lives and retains powers well beyond that of the intruders but for reasons of their own, they allow the colonization to proceed.

After nearly twenty years crewing merchant rockets, Century Smith acquires his own ship, inheriting it from his final captain and friend, Binder Raj. The Salambo is an older ship but has been cared for meticulously and modified in ways that make it more than the equal of many modern rockets.
